With Summer being incredibly busy, I know it can be hard for everyone to stay on course when it comes to healthy eating. It is SO much easier to say, let’s order pizza or get take out instead of chopping up veggies and cooking for an hour. At least that’s how it is for me. When my kids come to me every 5 minutes saying, “I’m hungry!” I usually just tell them to go find something in the pantry to eat, which is not ideal. That’s why I wanted to share with you guys my healthy make-ahead snack boxes!
I have a hard time admitting it, but that usually means something like popcorn, crackers, chips, yogurt or jello. It’s rarely fruit or vegetables. And it’s not because they won’t eat those foods, it’s because Mommy doesn’t always purchase these foods, because 90% of the time they sit in the fridge getting uneaten and eventual rot and make their way to the trash. And I’m sick of throwing away healthy foods.
So what’s a mom to do? Instead of making them pick something out, cut it up or do all the prep work themselves, I took the guessing out of it. I now create “snack boxes” that I know my kids will love. And all they have to do is open up the fridge. Such hard work, I know.
Doing all of the prep work in advance and having everything already laid out and ready to eat makes my life so much easier! And not to mention my kids are getting plenty of fruits and veggies every time they snack, instead of junk. Okay fine, I’m not gonna lie, I’ll allow junk food every so often 😎
But still, I decided I needed to step up my mom game and really make an effort with my kids’ eating habits when I saw myself in one of those #momfail moments. I was cooking the cheesy noodles and handing them the processed junk food, and I just knew it had to stop. Don’t get me wrong, these are fine sometimes, but not as often as I was giving it to my kids!
I feel like I should mention that all three of my kids are healthy, not overweight. This doesn’t have anything to do with them being on a special strict diet. It just has to do with me wanting my kids to grow up with a love for healthy foods. Plain and simple. Introduce it when they’re young and they will keep that love for it!
Snack Box Ideas
This box is obvs the favorite. IT has the best tasting fruit in there, hehe. This is Mommy’s go-to box, shhh. Don’t tell my kids. Strawberries, apples, grapes, and blueberries! #YUM
Next box I filled with things I know my kids will gobble up. Cuties, blueberries, spring cheese, apples, and pretzels. These are a good source of fruits as well as proteins! And honestly guys, throw whatever fruits and veggies your kids will eat. I also use bananas, nectarines, peaches, kiwis, and I mix and match. IT doesn’t have to be just fruit just veggies, or just protein. I like the variety!
This one is mostly protein. I use ham because my kids prefer that over turkey, but I do use both. Use whatever meat your kids and you prefer.
I hope these pictures will help you guys with snack prep in your house. I know for me it has made a HUGE difference. When fruit and veggies sit in the fridge uncut and unprepared, they never get eaten. But when I do the prep work (All of this took me about an 45 minutes) they get gobbled up!
It honestly makes me feel like an “awesome mom” because my kids are eating a whole lot healthier! And I can say that I’m officially addicted to it. It’s fun. And when you open your fridge and it is packed with food, it makes me feel good! Weird I know, but it’s true..
