Why is Christmas so Stressful?

With only 3 days left till Christmas, I am feeling the stress. Are you? I’m not the only one right? Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and peace, but lately I’ve been struggling to find that Christmas spirit that is usually so present in my Decembers.

This year is different indeed. With my husband and I going through our own struggles right now, the Christmas spirit just seems so far away. That song “Where are you Christmas?” from the Grinch movie, you know the one I’m talking about, sung by Faith Hill, yes that one, when I hear it come on the radio, I can’t help but feel so depressingly connected to that song. It truly does feel like the laughter and joy of Christmas is just so far away.

I realize maybe what’s happening is that I’m putting too much into what I FEEL instead of listening to what God says. Sometimes when we think something is unfair, we lash out. We let our emotions get the best of us. And I don’t know about you, but I am sick of letting my emotions control me. It NEVER works out positively when we let our emotions take the wheel.

I’m an emotional woman. I just am. Especially at “that time” of the month. And I hate that about myself. I do not use it as a cop out or an excuse to misbehave. At least that’s what I tell myself! Ha! But I mean, I most definitely see an increase of instability around that time. Just sayin’.

Sure there may be plenty of reasons for me to burst into tears because things are hurting right now. There may be reasons for anger, frustration, stress, sadness, loneliness, insecurity, bitterness, and many more things, especially around Christmas. But God says,

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

And here’s another incase you missed the point of that last one..

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” Proverbs 25:28

Hmm, God says a lot about self-control in those two verses. Sometimes it’s extremely hard! And God knows this. That’s why He reassures us and encourages us..

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

When we are filled with the Holy spirit, we don’t have to let all of these emotions take over. If we ALLOW (here’s the kicker. It’s our choice) sin to enter into our lives by losing our self-control, we hand control over to satan.

So, this holiday season, when you feel like the things in your life are just too much, or you are stressing over Christmas and if you’ll have everything ready in time, or if the house is clean enough, remember this verse!

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

So guys, slow down this Christmas. Enjoy what is around you. Things can look bleak and seem impossible, but remember nothing is impossible for God.

Take a breath, don’t let your emotions take over. God is with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

ENJOY this Holiday season. Admire the beauty that is around you. Winter is such a breathtaking, gorgeous season. Breath it in and be sure and recognize that whatever you’re going through- God’s got this! No need to stress…

I wish you all have a joyful and blessed Christmas!
