When We Can’t Hear God.

As a daughter of Christ, I find myself occasionally praying and asking God why He doesn’t just speak to me. You know, to answer my questions, to tell me WHY things are happening the way they’re happening, to tell me how I should act or what I should say in a given situation. And right then, I have to stop myself. There are so many ways God answers those questions, it’s up to us to open our eyes and ears and LISTEN!

So this morning, I was in the bathroom getting ready, and I don’t know about you but when I get ready in the morning I tend to get deep into thought about my life and how God is working in it. I started praying and I actually stood there crying and said, “God, I wish you would just talk to me!”

How could I say that to God? As if He has no way of reaching us. How juvenile and dumb I felt after saying that. There are a lot of things that will happen in our lives that don’t go the way we want. And throwing tantrums will not fix the situation, trust me..

I’ve been going through an abundance of trials and tribulations lately (still going through them) and I have been seeking God more than I ever have in my life before. But at times, I still feel lost, alone, and scared. I often ask myself, why isn’t He speaking to Me? I don’t hear Him.

God uses many things in and around us to speak to us.. Take for instance me this morning. I cried out to God asking him to speak to me because I felt alone and scared of what my future was going to bring. Later on that morning, I started browsing Facebook. Not the likely place to hear God, but right there as I scrolled, I saw a post from The Praying Woman that said “5 scriptures to find peace in your season of loneliness”. I clicked on it and read the excerpt and the verses. Right then and there God reassured me I was not alone. He was with me. He actually never left me.

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

So I thought to myself, what are the ways God speaks to me? And here’s what I came up with.

  • God will use fellow believers to speak to us.

The other day my husband told me that at his job, where he is an RN, he met an older lady who had been married for over 60 years. He asked her questions about the secret to a successful marriage and he got what I think was some Godly advice about commitment and love. You see, God uses people all over the place to speak to us. Coworkers, fellow church goers, neighbors, family members. It may be tough love or some much needed encouragement, whatever the case, listen carefully because it may just be God trying to get a hold of you.

Stay strong to recognize when unwise counsel may lead you astray. It should be easy to differentiate between the two right? Well, if you know people who claim to be believers but clearly do not live according to God’s word take it from me, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take advice from ungodly people. That counsel is not from God, it is from the devil who is trying to lead you astray. Don’t be dumb. Seek Godly advice always. If you are unsure, go to the Word, you will find your clarity there. Or simply go to your pastor.

  • God uses His Holy Word to speak to us.

This is a no brainer. Reading that verse this morning about how God will never leave me is exactly what I needed to hear in that moment of loneliness. God gave us this beautiful gift of His Word that is so easily accessible to us today. We have tablets, phones, books, all where God’s word is at our fingertips. Open it up and read it! He is waiting to speak to you.

  • God uses music to speak to us.

YASSSSS!! I am a firm believer that whatever music you put into your head WILL affect how you live and act. I’ll admit that I grew up only listening to Christian music, except for Christmas time. I did not hate it, but once I was a teenager, my music likes started drastically changing. I started listening to whatever I wanted. Cussing, sex, drugs, it was in all the music and it was normal. Right? Once I had kids, I cut out the “really bad” stuff and just listened to the top 40 stuff. Occasionally we’d listen to Christian music, but it was probably about 10% Christian, 90% secular. And that was normal for us.

Since cutting that out of my life completely, I now see how big of an impact it had on my life and how not having it in my life anymore drastically changes my daily outlook on things. When I turn on the radio in the car, take a shower, do my hair, I have God music blasting. He speaks to me, encourages me, reminds me that I AM LOVED. And there is no greater reminder.

  • God uses prayer to speak to us.

While I prayed this morning, I left my heart open to hear what God was trying to tell me. And He did speak to me. After I made that dumb statement about how I can’t hear Him, He immediately said, “you’re not seeking Me!!!”

It’s not up to us to just sit back and wait for God to talk or wait for HIM to do something. No, it is our job to seek Him. To pursue that relationship with Him. He longs to hear from us and to hear what troubles our hearts.

Jeremiah 29:12 Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.”

Bottom line here guys, God is with us. He never leaves us and you are never alone. Do not feel abandoned. He will never abandon you. Reach out to Him and seek Him with every ounce of your being. He will answer you. You just have to be willing to listen.

I love you guys and I pray God uses you and me today to shine some of His light!
